3G
- FAQ
Question
What is 3G or Mobile's Third Generation?
Answer
The first generation of cellular phones was defined by the
analog networks. The second generation was defined by the move
to digital networks. 'Third generation' (3G) wireless will be
defined by the migration to packet-switched networks at
high-speed data rates. This will be a highly efficient means
for transmitting not only voice, but also data.
Question
How fast are those speed rates?
Answer
Currently, data transmission rates on most networks range from
14.4 to 19.2 Kbps.Third generation technology will handle
information at speeds up to 144 Kbps.
Question
Why do we need all that speed?
Answer
Presently, with technologies such as SMS and WAP, stock quotes
and limited Web site information can be delivered via cell
phones. 3G opens up the ability to deliver a much richer range
of services including a full websurfing experience, video
(mail, news clips, video conferencing) and multiple forms of
enterntainment.
Question
Which services will be offered with 3G?
Answer
Initially, real-time information will be the most valuable
service to end-users, but as the free browsing possibilities
develop, and more advanced devices are built, this will all
change. Most initial applications are likely to be retail
related, for example, for products comparision (similarities,
prices, etc.) and transactions (download coupons,
authorization codes, scanning, etc.) This will foster the
development of M-commerce (mobile commerce). Also, the
increased capacity for handling large amounts of data will
facilitate the delivery of graphics-rich information and, if
we add this to the existing positioning capabilities, other
applications that we could be using could be downloading
detailed, scaleable maps and other driver information.
Question
Who will benefit from 3G?
Answer
Everybody! Retail merchants, financial service institutions,
entertainment companies - they'll all be more actively
involved in m-commerce. Since wireless Internet services
require such low capital costs, these companies are looking to
attract customers to this kind of wireless transaction
environment.
Question
What's the big deal with 3G?
Answer
We suggest you have a look at our Mobile Data Statistics link,
provided by OpenTV, so that you can get an idea of the huge
growth expected in wireless data use.The general consensus
points out that there will be more than one billion users by
2005.
Question
When is 3G expected to arrive?
Answer
Japan is scheduled to roll out 3G in 2001, with Western Europe
following in 2002 and 2003. The U.S. is about a year behind
Europe due to the existence of different technologies.
However, the time to acts is now if you want to become a mayor
player in the communications and enterntainment world of the
future.
Question
What does Group 3G offer?
Answer
Group 3G offers last minute information about the new third
generation and other wireless services and products. We have
the most extensive data base of 3G domain names available, for
those who want to develop services and secure their presence
in this emerging market. As the technology spreads and
consolidates, we will be offering 3G based applications and
services.
